I was just reading an article on Jeff Beck and although he is not the only one with this style, he is a master. It's kinda played to say "he makes his guitar talk" but that's just what I am talking about.

There are several benefits to learn vocals on guitar:

  • it forces you to phrase differently
  • it helps to train your ear
  • you can "trade licks" with another instrument
  • you will explore uncharted waters
  • transfer the music in your head to the guitar

I strongly suggest you try this technique by starting with simple vocals that are bent into your head (nursery rhymes or commercial jingles), then move on to some of your favorite songs. I would also try to learn keyboard or horn parts. Even if you can't nail it exactly, it will help your playing. Some different phrasing techniques include bends, slides, hammer/pull offs, bar antics, and using harmonics. Combining two or more will really get interesting. Check out May 2010 Guitar World for more on Jeff's technique.
